part 4

A second blast just as severe as the first happened November 24 and a third explosion was recorded two days later.

Nicholas Davidson, an attorney for the families, said the findings are important to them.

"Obviously gives them some comfort," he said.

"A lot of us cried, and I'm still crying inside, but it's part of the healing and we will move on," said Bernie Monk, father of miner Michael, who died in the mine.

part 3

The first explosion at the mine, on New Zealand's South Island, happened on November 19. Authorities repeatedly said dangerous gas levels in the mine were too high for rescuers to enter, and two camera-bearing robots failed to find the men.

A second blast just as severe as the first happened November 24 and a third explosion was recorded two days later.

part 2

The 29 miners, between the ages of 17 and 62, were believed to have been spread throughout the Pike River mine, with perhaps half trapped in one area, Pike River Coal CEO Peter Whittall has said.

"The miners would have become unconscious as a result of acute hypoxic-hypoxia almost immediately," Supt. Gary Knowles, Tasman district police commander, said Thursday. "They would have remained unconscious until death ... three to five minutes later."

Coroner: New Zealand miners died quickly

The 29 miners who were killed in an underground explosion in New Zealand last year died immediately or a short time later, authorities said Thursday.

"The death of all 29 men occurred on the 19th of November either at the immediate time of the large explosion, which occurred in the mine, or a very short time thereafter," according to Judge Neil MacLean, the chief coroner, who ruled after hearing evidence collected during the investigation.

Get proper medical treatment at the right time

If you have a drinking problem and you wish to quit drinking, then you must get proper medical treatment for your problem. People who are mildly dependant on alcohol can be treated and their symptoms controlled with a proper diet and Thiamin vitamin intake. However, people who are severely dependent on alcohol need to be medically administered by a physician, who will substitute Valium for alcohol and gradually reduce its dosage till the patient is drug free. So if you are a heavy drinker who wants to quit this habit, then you must get in touch with a professional who specializes in alcohol and drug treatment programs to prevent any complications.

Severe withdrawal symptoms

The more severe withdrawal symptoms include a state of confusion and agitation, along with fever, convulsions and black outs. The person experiences visual hallucinations which are known as DTs or delirium tremens, which occur three to five days without alcohol. The person also experiences convulsions and seizures and if not medically treated, it can lead to disorientation, hyperactivity and extreme cardiovascular disturbances. It is said that no medical treatment can stop DTs once they begin and eventually leads to seizures, heart attack and stroke which can be fatal.

Possible physical symptoms

The mild symptoms are not dangerous, but all the withdrawal symptoms are accompanied with craving for alcohol, making it difficult for alcoholics to get rid of their addiction. Even non-addicts who have had too much to drink the night before experience some of these withdrawal symptoms the next morning when they do not drink. However, for such people, the symptoms only last for a couple of hours, but for addicts they can last for days and weeks. Some people may experience severe withdrawal symptoms.

Possible psychological symptoms

Most people will experience mild to moderate psychological symptoms such as nervousness, anxiety, irritability, depression, fatigue, difficulty thinking clearly, emotional volatility and a feeling of shakiness. Some people even experience bad dreams during their sleep.

Possible physical symptoms

Some common physical symptoms of alcohol withdrawal include headache, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, insomnia, sweating of the palms, hands or face, paleness, palpitations and rapid heart beat, increased blood pressure, tremors of the hands, involuntary movement of the eyelids, and abnormal movement along with others.

effects

If you are regular drinker and want to quit, then you will need some help to get you through it. First of all, you must know that it is impossible to predict how an individual would respond to quitting. Every person will experience some form of withdrawal symptoms, but some will experience more severe symptoms than others. Here is a list of the symptoms you will be experiencing if you suddenly stop drinking.

Possible Symptoms of Alcohol Withdrawal

A lot of people become addicted to alcohol if they are in a habit of drinking regularly, and have been drinking for a long period of time. But if the addict suddenly tries to stop drinking, it can create life threatening problems for the person. This is because in addicts, alcohol consumption has to be regularly monitored and slowly reduced to prevent any withdrawal symptoms.

drinking alcohol

Drink slowly – When you do drink, pace yourself and drink slowly, one sip at a time. Also, do not have more than one drink per hour, and never exceed the allowed intake for healthy men and women mentioned above. You can also take non-alcoholic drinks in between your drinks if you must drink to reduce the affects of alcohol. These drinks can include water, soda, juice or any similar drink.

Know when to say “No” – If a friend or acquaintance at a party continues to involve you in drinking, then think straight and know when to say “no”. If you are offered a drink at some party or get together or at the time when you do not want it, then politely refuse it.

level of intake

Know your “healthy alcohol intake” – If you are a healthy individual, whether male of female, you can have up to 4 drinks in a day, but no more than 14 drinks in a week. A standard drink measures 12 ounces of regular beer, 8 to 9 ounces of malt liquor, 5 ounces of table wine or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof spirits. If you are over 65 years of age, you can have up to 3 drinks per day but no more than 7 drinks in a week. However, if you have health problems, your intake should be much less than this and you can consult with your doctor about it.

Take food with your drink – Never drink on an empty stomach. Always take some food before you drink so the alcohol absorbs slowly into your system.

part 2

Measure and count – If you are in a habit of drinking often, make sure you know the standard drink sizes, and always keep track of how much you have had to drink. It might be easy for you to measure any drink you take at home, but it might not be possible for you to measure the drinks you have at a party. In such a case, make sure you ask the bartender about the recipe of the drink you are taking.

Set goals – If you want to cut down your habit of drinking, then you need to set goals and make a plan to reduce your alcohol intake. Keep your drinking within the limits to avoid alcohol related health problems.

Tips to help you cut down on drinking

Drinking alcohol regularly for a prolonged period of time leads to alcoholism and increases the chances of drinking-related problems. However, if you keep a check on your alcohol intake, and use tips to cut down on your drinking problem, you can control alcohol-related problems to a great extent. Here are some tips to help you do that.

Keep track – If you want to cut down on your alcohol intake, you need to keep track of when you drink, how much drink and how often do you drink. Some people will need to put in a conscious effort to keep track of their alcohol intake, but you have to make sure that you keep track as it will help cut down your intake.

Make your own Cell Phone Macro Lens

Method to arrange the material:

1. Cut apart your old DVD drive to obtain out of the small lens in it.
2. Take the lens and stay in exactly over your mobile lens and place a cello tape over it to grasp the lens.
3. Remember that putting the cello tape totally over the lens would reduce the clarity. Hence, try to put the least amount possible portion of tape on the lens which is just adequate to grasp it.
4. Use something pointed you have to split off the cello tape that coats the lens.
5. Now use this to capture close up pictures of very small material you have.

Working:

The small lens inside the DVD drive is just of the ideal size and has a wonderful magnification to revolve the mobile camera lens into a macro tool. This can be used to capture clearer macro pictures of ICs, Tiny insects, diodes, etc. When compared to a usual camera phone. It’s for about nothing.

Google Censoring Torrent Search Suggestions: 7 Terrible Things They Don't Censor

Google’s war against torrents is being kept quiet. No announcements. No press releases. You will only find the story in blogs that are carefully watching.

In essence, Google is removing keywords from their Suggest and Instant results so that they are no longer recommended when people start typing them. If you continue all the way through on a term such as “BitTorrent,” Google will offer the results. Reluctantly. They won’t help you out at all, even if you type all the way to the “n.” Try typing in “BitTorren” without the last “t” into Google.

Apparently, they have no idea what you’re talking about.

It’s their search and they’ve made their choice. The funny part is that something as relatively harmless as downloading torrents is considered taboo on Google, but there are plenty of other more harmful searches that Google is all too willing to recommend…

Ford earns $6.6 billion in 2010

Ford said this morning that it earned a profit of $6.6 billion in 2010, less than the company was expected to report, but the most since 1999 when the automaker’s Explorer was America’s most popular SUV.

Ford also said that its hourly workers will receive an average profit-sharing check of $5,000.

The profit-sharing checks that Ford’s 40,600 U.S. hourly employees will get in March will be the largest since they received $6,700 in 2001.

Pollution Detecting Clothing Is Here

Leave it up to a duo stuck on the fashionable yet smoggy island of Manhattan to come up with the first clothing line that can help you breathe easier.

Nien Lam and Sue Ngo, two graduate students in NYU's interactive telecommunications program, said they wanted to make a statement about air pollution while also remaining conscious of fashion. Drawing inspiration from the Hypercolor T-shirts of yore, the "Warning Signs" line was born.

There are currently just two shirts, one emblazoned with a heart and the other emblazoned with a pair of lungs. The organs have blue veins that glow when in contact with high levels of carbon monoxide.

Next up, says Ngo, is alcohol sensing clothing whose liver lights up when you get too drunk.

WikiLeaks: Moving Target

This has been an exciting month for those of us who study the Internet's infrastructure and think about ways to keep it running (and growing). Did I say exciting? Maybe "exhausting" would be more accurate. From China, to Iran, to the US Congress, everyone seems to be wondering how best to control the Internet and bring it in line with local law.

And then came the latest iteration of the WikiLeaks drama.

Love them or hate them, you have to admit that these folks are effective at creating and sustaining an audience for their content. Their glacially slow release of secret information, a few tastes each day, is calculated to feed a media storm that could easily last for months.

If nothing else, the massive amounts of traffic they are attracting, and the efforts of actors unknown to shut them down, have created a unique laboratory for studying Internet resilience.wikileaks_logo.png

Consider their primary website: wikileaks.org. They lost their Web hosting, their payment services, and ultimately the use of the domain name itself, all while coming under withering DDoS attacks and intermittent nation-level blacklisting. And yet, WikiLeaks stays up, taunting their adversaries with their jaunty hourglass and hourly tweets of coming attractions.

Facebook gets more secure with HTTPS and CAPTCHA

The second measure is a captcha-like authentication mechanism that instead of relying on illegible printed words employs photographs of a Facebook user's own friends.

Rice continues: "Instead of showing you a traditional captcha on Facebook, one of the ways we may help verify your identity is through social authentication. We will show you a few pictures of your friends and ask you to name the person in those photos. Hackers halfway across the world might know your password, but they don't know who your friends are."

Meanwhile, Facebook has remained officially mum regarding yesterday's apparent hacking incident that saw someone insert a message onto Zuckerberg's Facebook fan page, which has attracted 2.8 million Facebook users. While it was removed relatively quickly, some 1,800 of those users managed to "like" the page and more than 400 left comments beforehand. The message read:

"Let the hacking begin: If facebook needs money, instead of going to the banks, why doesn't Facebook let its users invest in Facebook in a social way? Why not transform Facebook into a 'social business' the way Nobel Price [sic] winner Muhammad Yunus described it? #hackercup2011"

How Big of a Problem is Return Fraud?

While nearly 90% of Americans believe that most retailers’ return practices are fair, this does not stop many from taking advantage of the nation’s retail businesses. Perhaps the old saying that, “the customer is always right,” is to blame for why many take advantage of return policies, which become especially lenient and accommodating around the holidays. The graphic below depicts the rate and severity of post-holiday fraudulent returns — a problem for many retailers, large and small.

Egypt Leaves the Internet

Confirming what a few have reported this evening: in an action unprecedented in Internet history, the Egyptian government appears to have ordered service providers to shut down all international connections to the Internet. Critical European-Asian fiber-optic routes through Egypt appear to be unaffected for now. But every Egyptian provider, every business, bank, Internet cafe, website, school, embassy, and government office that relied on the big four Egyptian ISPs for their Internet connectivity is now cut off from the rest of the world. Link Egypt, Vodafone/Raya, Telecom Egypt, Etisalat Misr, and all their customers and partners are, for the moment, off the air.
egypt_outages.png

At 22:34 UTC (00:34am local time), Renesys observed the virtually simultaneous withdrawal of all routes to Egyptian networks in the Internet's global routing table. Approximately 3,500 individual BGP routes were withdrawn, leaving no valid paths by which the rest of the world could continue to exchange Internet traffic with Egypt's service providers. Virtually all of Egypt's Internet addresses are now unreachable, worldwide.

This is a completely different situation from the modest Internet manipulation that took place in Tunisia, where specific routes were blocked, or Iran, where the Internet stayed up in a rate-limited form designed to make Internet connectivity painfully slow. The Egyptian government's actions tonight have essentially wiped their country from the global map.

What happens when you disconnect a modern economy and 80,000,000 people from the Internet? What will happen tomorrow, on the streets and in the credit markets? This has never happened before, and the unknowns are piling up. We will continue to dig into the event, and will update this story as we learn more. As Friday dawns in Cairo under this unprecedented communications blackout, keep the Egyptian people in your thoughts.

apple ipod shuffle review

The good: The iPod Shuffle returns to its big-button glory days, only this time around it offers support for playlists, audiobooks, podcasts, Genius Mixes, and a multilingual VoiceOver feature that announces track information, battery status, and menu navigation.

The bad: The 2GB capacity can't hold much; there's no headphone remote nor radio; the track controls tend to get pinched when clipping the iPod to your clothes; and the chances of you accidentally running it through the washing machine are quite high.

The bottom line: The iPod Shuffle's buttons are back, and the lightest, smallest MP3 player on the planet is now better than ever.
